Doing Freelance Marketing for a Start Up Company. Need Advice on Where to Start.?

I am a marketing assistant for a company. I sought to do freelance marketing on the side to be able to get more experience. A start up company asked me to help build their marketing and sales from the ground up. What they need me to do is to prospect and get clients to advertise online.

What should I be doing right now to help establish a foundation? Also what can I do to prospect? The company obviously does not have a sales kit not even a marketing campaign!

The best thing you can do is spend some time understanding the company's target markets, target customers and their behaviors, the unique selling proposition of the company's products and the company's product road map.

Evaluate the current resources available to you (web site, existing ad campaigns (organic, PPC or offline), etc and the budget that the company has allocated for sales and marketing.

Beyond this point it gets a little nebulous because I lack specifics, but in general you should focus on those customer pain points that your products' USP addresses most closely. These should be low hanging fruit for the company....Doing Freelance Marketing for a Start Up Company. Need Advice on Where to Start.?
Some of the ways you can advertise your business are:

1. Post an article about your business on related blogs and get free visitors and back links

2. Submitting to directories

3. Free classifieds

4. Forums
